One of the most Beautiful roads of America, Independence Pass in Colorado.
At one point the road width becomes so small, only one car can pass or else someone is going down a cliff. Look at how the road winds like that. I pulled over to the side and spent 20 minutes enjoying that view. Breathtaking!

My experience at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.
It’s a beautiful place, really. Up in the mountains, made to resemble how it looked at the turn of the century - full of scenery and history. And supposedly ghosts.
I’m not a believer in ghosts or spirits or whatever, to be honest, but things happen that our humble minds don’t understand yet. That much is simple fact.
There are many, many, many, MANY of those kinds of things that happen at that hotel.
One thing in particular, for me, was that my parents and I stayed in room 418 that is supposedly haunted by a little boy named Matthew who likes to play. Nothing really big happened or anything - the only thing that we thought was a little odd was the fact that my parents were stiflingly hot during the night and I was freezing cold, all three of us in the same tiny room. That kind of a temperature difference is a little weird.
But we didn’t think it was really, truly weird until we found out the next morning that there is no air conditioning anywhere in that hotel.
No vent I could’ve possibly been placed over accidentally.
I wasn’t any closer to the window or the door than my parents were.
And, yeah, “ghosts” or whatever they are have been known to have been associated with “cold spots” which essentially means that they use up the heat around them in order to manifest themselves and therefore make the area they’re in really cold.
So…
maybe Matthew likes me?
It’s a fun thought.
Skiing has always been at the heart of Scott Dunn, especially this year - our celebratory 25th winter season.
We recently asked our guests for their feedback on what new ski destinations and resorts they’d be interested in visiting in the future - and one destination in particular was top of the list… Colorado.
Olly, who head’s up our commerical team, recently returned from a frenetic 10 days exploring Colorado’s top resorts looking into exciting new ski product for our guests - here’s his update (with just a little bit of name dropping!).
I’m truly exhausted after some 10,000 miles travelled, 55 hotel visits in five resorts and the small matter of 100,000 vertical feet in great skiing conditions - excellent snow and blue skies. While I will be delighted never to see another condo again, I cannot wait to offer new product in Vail, Beaver Creek and Aspen to our guests - you are going to love them!
Vail is the perfect combination of great ski terrain, famous Colorado powder, some truly fantastic properties and faultless service. On the slopes, the EpicMix system is a great way of tracking your skiing and competing for the most vertical skied.
Beaver Creek is Vail’s little sister but, having seen Lindsey Vonn win the Giant Slalom on the Birds of Prey course, I can reassure you that there is nothing little about the ski area. Bode Miller clearly loves it too as he won the downhill the next day after I gave him a few words of encouragement in the lift of the Pines.
I was hugely impressed by Aspen. I have to admit that I had half expected it to be a little pretentious and overly pampering but very happily, I was proven completely wrong. The historic town has lots of atmosphere and the skiing is genuinely challenging. For some it will be a bit too challenging but Snowmass’ endless groomers will be the perfect antidote - entertaining beginners, intermediates and experts for days on end.
A big thank you to all the guys at Vail Resorts and Aspen Snowmass for looking after me so well - true American hospitality. I will be back!
Keep an eye on our website and skimail for the launch of our new luxury ski holidays to the USA and Canada launching in spring 2012!
